Phoenix Takes Over Top Spot In Pacific; Tied For Top Spot In Conference

This is starting to get ridiculous, and it's almost enough to make you wonder if the Coyotes will ever lose another game.

The combination of their 3-2 shootout win in Dallas on Sunday night, along with San Jose's embarrassing 5-1 loss in Edmonton has not only put Phoenix -- PHOENIX! -- in first place of the Pacific Division, but also in a tie for the top spot in the Western Conference with the Chicago Blackhawks, a team they just beat on Saturday with an impressive come-from-behind win.

No team in the Western Conference has more wins than Phoenix (46), while only the Washington Capitals have more in the entire league. The Coyotes haven't lost since their shopping spree at the trade deadline earlier this month, ripping off a nine-game winning streak after adding Lee Stempniak, Wojtek Wolski and Derek Morris, and they've also won 19 of their past 25 games, with eight of them coming by way of the shootout.

I suppose that can either be a good thing or a bad thing in the long run; after all, there's no shootout in the playoffs, but it's nice to keep taking advantage of it and improve your standing in the conference while you still can.

Teemu Selanne Scores 600th Career Goal

Anaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne added anther milestone to his already impressive Hall of Fame resume on Sunday night when he tallied the 600th goal of his NHL career at the 34 second mark of the second period of Anaheim's 5-2 win against Colorado. He becomes just the 18th player in league history to reach the plateau, and only the third European player (Jaromir Jagr and Jari Kurri are the others).

He hit the ground running as a rookie during the 1992-93 campaign, scoring an incredible 76 goals -- tied for the league lead -- with the Winnipeg Jets. He's also spent time with the Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and is currently in his second stint with Anaheim, scoring 225 of his goals with the Ducks.

He's a 10-time All-Star, a Stanley Cup Champion, a three-time Rocket Richard Award winner and a four-time Olympian for his native Finland. Here's the video of his 600th goal.

Minnesota Duluth Beats Cornell in Three Overtimes for NCAA Women's Title

Filed under:

Minnesota Duluth's history in women's hockey is nothing short of outstanding. Entering this season, they had won four of the nine NCAA-sanctioned championships in the sport's history. A win Sunday would give them their fifth championship in ten years, impressive in any way you can consume that statistic.

Cornell's past is less decorated. This year marked the first time since the sport was added by the NCAA that Cornell posted a winning season, and the Big Red marked it with their first NCAA berth. They upset well-known Eastern programs Harvard and Mercyhurst to reach the championship at the Women's Frozen Four in Minneapolis Sunday afternoon, but knew they would need an upset to topple UMD.

They didn't quite get over the hump. Jessica Wong tipped a point shot by Tara Gray with 33.6 seconds to play in the third overtime, giving UMD a 3-2 win in the longest NCAA women's final ever.

Miami, Denver Get Top Seeds for NCAA Hockey Championship

Filed under:

Last year, it was top national seed Boston University winning the championship after a slew of upsets involving the other top seeds.

One of those upsets involved this year's top national seeds. At the West Regional in Minneapolis, fourth-seed Miami University took down top seed Denver 4-1. The RedHawks went on to the Frozen Four, and lost in overtime to BU in the final.

This year, Boston University didn't make the tournament, but Miami and Denver return as the top two national seeds in the 16-team field, which was announced Sunday.

Coyotes Refuse to Lose

Sellouts have been rare at Jobing.com Arena this season.

Wins, however, have not.

Saturday night, the two combined for an amazing night of hockey in the desert. The Phoenix Coyotes overcame a pair of two-goal deficits, then got a Radim Vrbata goal in the shootout to top the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4. It is the eighth straight win for the Coyotes, who are suddenly just one point out of the Pacific Division lead and two points behind Chicago for the top spot in the Western Conference.

The amazing resiliency of this Phoenix outfit came to the forefront again Saturday.
